The month of October brings to mind Halloween and Pumpkins. You can use these tasty, healthy treats to give out to your K9 Trick-or-Treaters.
Pumpkin Biscotti Dog Treats
1 cup canned pumpkin puree (NOT pie filling)
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup liquid honey
1 large egg
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 tbsp. canola oil
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
Preheat oven to 350° F. In a large bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree, honey, water, oil, egg and vanilla. Stir in flour, cinnamon baking powder and baking soda. Mix well. In bowl and using hands, knead until dough holds together. Transfer to lightly floured surface. Divide dough into 2 equal parts. Shape each piece into a log. Flatten the logs to make about 4” wide. With a fork, poke holes over the surface of the logs. Place about 4” apart on baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes or until firm. Let cool for 30 minutes. Reduce temperature to 300° F. With a sharp knife, slice each log into 1/4” thick slices. Place, cut side down and about 1/2” apart on baking sheets. Bake for 30 minutes longer or until hard. Let cool in oven to remove moisture. For a wheat/grain free recipe, substitute whole wheat flour for whole bean flour. Being a drier flour, you will need to use about 1/4 cup less flour than the recipe calls for. Mix in slowly and adjust accordingly.

Pet & Pumpkin Tip:
Pumpkin is very nutritious. It is loaded with Beta carotene and anti-oxidants, especially Vitamin C which can help lower the risks of cancer, cataracts and heart disease in your cat or dog. Pumpkin in pureed form, with no sugar added, is a good natural remedy for chronic diarrhea or constipation which sometimes plague cats and dogs. Pumpkin is very rich in fiber. The insoluble fiber attracts water, drawing moisture into hard stool, making it softer and easier to pass. Loose stool will become firmer as the moisture is held by the fibrous component of the pumpkin. Adding just 1 or 2 teaspoons to your pet’s food often helps to get their systems moving in no time. Pumpkin is also a satisfying and filling addition to a dog's meal and can be used to decrease appetite in dogs on weight loss plans. Before adding or changing anything in your pets' diet, always consult first with your veterinarian.

Fido Fruit Bars
INGREDIENTS
2 cups whole wheat flour*
¼ cup honey
1 tsp. lemon rind, grated
¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
½ cup canola oil
1¼ cups fruit, with skin, pits, and core removed**
Important Note:
** Ensure all fruits are pet safe - NO Grapes or Raisins. Grapes or Raisins can damage kidneys and cause kidney failure.
Put the fruit in a blender and puree, leaving the mixture firm. If mixture is not firm enough, add small amounts of flour until firm. Set aside. Mix all remaining ingredients in a separate bowl. Mixture should be crumbly. Set aside 1 cup of the flour mixture. Pat the remaining mixture into a greased 9” x 9” baking pan. Spread the puree mixture evenly over the top of the dough, leaving a ¼ inch border around the edges. Sprinkle the reserved flour mixture over the puree. Bake at 375º F for 35-40 minutes. The bars are done when the puree is firm and holds it’s firmness when cut; the mixture should be dry and firm to the touch. Cool completely and cut into 2 inch squares. Store in refrigerator and use within 1 week. * For a wheat/grain free recipe, substitute wheat flour for whole bean flour. Bean flour substitution is approximately 1½ cups of bean flour.
As with all treats, give treats in moderation and always check with your veterinarian.
